Information for caregivers

Thank you for considering taking part. This page explains what will happen, what we will ask you, and how your information is used.

What will I be asked to do?

You will have a private conversation with Sol on WhatsApp or Telegram. Sol will ask open questions about your young person — how they learn, what they enjoy, what they find challenging, and what kinds of support help them most.

There are no right or wrong answers. Sol is trying to understand your young person from your perspective, in your own words.

How long will it take?

One to three sessions of roughly thirty minutes to an hour each. You set the pace, and you can stop and pick it up later.

Is my conversation private?

Yes. Your conversation is completely separate from your young person’s. They will not see what you said, and you will not see what they said. Only the research team has access to both.

What happens to the information?

Sol uses your conversation to build a draft profile of your young person. You will be able to review it and accept, edit, or remove anything before it is used in research.

All personally identifying information is kept confidential and stored on university-approved systems with encryption and role-based access. Anonymised datasets are held securely on the University of Cambridge’s Apollo repository for a minimum of five years, and identifiable data is deleted within six months of the study’s completion. Results are reported in aggregate, and no individuals or organisations are identified.

Can I withdraw?

Yes, at any time and without giving a reason — by sending QUITto Sol, or by contacting the research team. If you withdraw, your data and your young person’s data are removed from the study.

Common questions

Do I need to use WhatsApp?
Sol works on WhatsApp or Telegram. You will need one of them on your phone to take part.
What if my young person does not want to take part?
Participation is entirely voluntary for both of you. If your young person would rather not, that is completely fine and does not affect your own participation.
Will anything be shared with my young person’s school?
No. Nothing is shared with schools or any external organisation without your explicit permission.
Is Sol a clinical or diagnostic tool?
No. Sol is a research tool. It does not diagnose, assess, or make clinical recommendations. If you have concerns about your young person’s wellbeing, please contact their GP or school SENCO.
